February is a great month for books with some big names from some big authors. New books from J.D. Robb and a new Alex Delaware book from Jonathan Kellerman are just some of this month’s highlights.

The science/fiction and fantasy genres definitely look interesting this month. Sarah Gailey has a new book called The Echo Wife that follows a woman who finds her clone cheating with her husband. Woah, talk about drama! There is also The History of What Comes Next dropping this month from Sylvain Neuvel. That book has drawn comparisons to Blake Crouch and Andy Weir, two of my favorites, so I’ll be checking that one out.

It’s February and that means Valentine’s Day and that means I’ll be paying close attention to the romance genre this month. I just can’t help myself! Lovebug from Erin Mallon and Bet the Farm by Staci Hart look like two big winners this month.

The romance and cozy mysteries are always a good palette cleanser after reading a scary horror book and this month has those as well. I will definitely be reading The Upstairs House by Julia Fine and then starting something else right after.

Best Upcoming Cozy Mystery Books: February 2021

Dead Man's Hand by Lorraine Bartlett and Gayle Leeson: The eighth book in Bartlett and Leeson’s Victoria Square Mystery series is Dead Man’s Hand. In this entry, Katie Bonner plays a friendly game of poker with her friends one night and then the next day Jamie Seifert drops dead in her tearoom. In order to clear her business’ name, Katie needs to prove that Jamie wasn’t poisoned. Her search will take her to a local poker room where Jamie made enemies and there is no shortage of suspects.

War of the Squirrels by Kirsten Weiss: The fourth in a series, War of the Squirrels is the continuatinon of the Wits’ End Cozy Mystery series. In this edition, Susan is trying to get through a visit from her controlling parents when two men die on the same day, and each of them have connections to her parents.

Farm to Trouble by Amanda Flower: This is the first in a new series called Farm to Table Mysteries from author Amanada Flower. The series will follow Shiloh Bellamy who cashed in her 401K to return home to Michigan and save her family’s farm. Her goal is to turn the farm into a sustainable, organic operation, but her plans take a turn when an investor is found dead at the farmer’s market.

Triple Chocolate Cheesecake Murder by Joanne Fluke: The 27th entry in the Hannah Swensen Mystery series is Triple Chocolate Cheesecake Murder. Hannah is back in action in this one when her sister calls her in a panic because Mayor Richard Bascomb has been murderer and Hannah’s sister Andrea is the top suspect. Hannah will be sprung into action to clear her sister’s name.

Long Island Iced Tina by Maria DiRico: Long Island Iced Tina is the second book in the Catering Hall Mystery series. This one sees Mia’s pregnant friend Nicole holding a shower at Belle View Banquet Manor. Nicole’s stepmother has plans of her own to throw a shower at the fanciest place in town, one of Mia’s competitors. At the Belle View shower, all hell breaks loose when a fight breaks out and a body is found floating in the marina.

Best Upcoming Fantasy/Sci-Fi Books: February 2021

Muse by Brittany Cavallaro: The year is 1893 and there is a war on the horizon in the First American Kingdom. However, Claire Emerson has a much bigger problem. Her father is an inventor that is well-regarded, but he believes that his genius is granted to him by his daughter’s touch and because of this he keep her under his close control. Her province prepares for war and when her father’s weapon fails, Claire is taken captive by Governor Remy Duchamp who believes that her touch can help him gain power. Is she ready to be someone else’s muse? Or bring it all down?

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey: Sarah Gailey’s latest takes the extramarital affair domestic thriller and turns it on its head in weird and intriguing ways. Evelyn does some breakthrough research to make a genetically cloned replica of herself that she calls Martine. She is everything that Evelyn is not – and she’s having an affair with Evelyn’s husband.

A History of What Comes Next by Sylvain Neuvel: Over 99 generations, Mia’s family has helped to shape human history and now it is her turn. The book takes place at the dawn of the age of rocketry and she is given the mission to lure Wernher Von Braun away from the Nazi party and into the American rocket program. However, her family isn’t the only one looking to pave history and there is a ruthless enemy behind the scenes that Mia must contend with.

This Golden Flame by Emily Victoria: Karis wants nothing more than to find her brother, but her desire means nothing to the Scriptorium. They have taken her and forced her to serve the ruling group of scribes who hope to unlock the magic of an ancient automation army. As she searches for her brother, she does the impossible and awakens a hidden automaton which puts her in the Scriptorium’s cross-hairs.

The Afterlife of the Party by Marlene Perez: A woman who would rather have stayed home is taken to a party by her best friend and it turns out to be the last decision of her life. When she wakes up the next morning, she’s a vampire and the afterlife is just beginning.

Best Upcoming Horror Books: February 2021

The Upstairs House by Julia Fine: Sometimes all it takes is once sentence to hook me on a book. This is one of those books. The sentence is “There’s a madwoman upstairs, and only Megan Weiler can see her.” Yes, please.

The Searching Dead by Ramsey Campbell: On a school trip to France in 1952, Dominic believes that his teacher has reasons to be there beyond the school trip, strange reasons. There is also a local church that puts you in touch with dead relatives who won’t go away. Dominic and his friends investigate and find terrible links between the two mysteries.

Rafael by Laurell K. Hamilton: The 28th entry in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. This book sees Rafael, king of the wererats, who must fight to the death to defend his crown. He wants Anita by his side for his battle and he will ask her to risk everything in order to do it.

The Children God Forgot by Graham Masterton: The master of horror returns with a page-turner. Three disturbing tales begin the book as a young woman is rushed to the hospital where she gives birth to a child with the face of an angel and the body of a tentacled monster. An engineer named Gemma is sent into a tunnel beneath London where she sees a strange green light illuminates a cluster of ghostly figures that she swears were children. This isn’t DC Jerry Pardoe and DS Jamila Patel’s first case involving the occult, but nothing will prepare them for what is in the city sewer.

Never Have I Ever: Stories by Isabel Yap: I love a good horror collection and this looks to be this month’s best. I’m especially excited to read “Have You Heard the One About Anamaria Marquez.”

Best Upcoming Mystery/Thriller Books: February 2021

The Unwilling by John Hart: This one takes place in the South at the height of the Vietnam War and follows a man named Gibby and his older brother Jason. Jason was in Vietnam and came back a changed man, just released from prison. He is trying to get a relationship with his younger brother, but he doesn’t care to talk about his past. The two go on a lake trip with two women where one of the women taunts a prison bus leading to a riot. The woman is murdered soon after and then the other is kidnapped, leading to Jason and Gibby becoming prime suspects in the case.

Quiet in Her Bones by Nalini Singh: Ten years ago, Nina Rai disappeared without a trace and everyone assumed it was just a trophy wife who was tired of her husband. Now, her bones have turned in the forest that surrounds her elite neighborhood. Someone around here knows what happened to her and her son is looking for answers.

Serpentine by Jonathan Kellerman: The 36th book in the Alex Delaware series, Serpentine, drops this month! How is that even possible? Thirty-six books!

The Survivors by Jane Harper: Kieran Elliot saw his life changed forever when he was younger thanks to a reckless mistake. The guilt still haunts him, but it comes back to the surface when he takes his family to his childhood home. When a body washes up on the beach, long-held secrets threaten to emerge.

Faithless in Death by J.D. Robb: If you thought thirty-six books was a lot, this is the fifty-second book in the In Death series. Just an incredible output by J.D. Robb and a character that remains fresh after all these years. This book sees Eve and her team investigating a crime-of-passion with a young woman found with her head bashed in. Her investigation leads to Gwen, a wealthy married woman, who can’t stop lying to them.

Best Upcoming Romance Books: February 2021

Bet the Farm by Staci Hart: Olivia inherits half of a dairy farm from her family with the other half going to a farmhand named Jake. The two decide to make a bet on whether Olivia can save the farm with Jake trying to distract her with his shirtless antics. The two soon find they have more problems than each other as the farm goes to disarray and they need to work together, closely, to save it.

Lovebug by Erin Mallon: The second book in a new series called The Natural History series by Erin Mallon. The book follows an entomologist named Mabel who is great with bugs, but bad with humans. She’s all but given up on men when a handsome groundskeeper with a dirty mouth enters her life and starts a fire in her.

Best Laid Plains by Ran Parrish: The second book in the Garnet Run series. This one sees Charlie as a man who put his life aside to take care of things. When his parents died, he took care of his little brother and his father’s hardware store. Now, a stranger with tattoos starts coming into the store and Charlie’s urge to help is something he can’t resist. Rye is accepting of the help and finds Charlie’s help, and Charlie himself, hard to resist.

Strong Enough by Kelly Elliot: The final novel is Kelly Elliot’s Meet Me in Montana series. Dirk’s life was exactly how he wanted it until it wasn’t. When it wasn’t, that was when Merit showed up back in town and turned his world upside down. She was the only woman who could heal him, if he would just let her in.

A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas: The fourth entry in the Court of Thorns and Roses series. Thsi book sees Feyre’s sister Nesta as the focus. Nesta has always been proud and slow to forgive, and she’s struggled putting the horrors of the war behind her. There is no one who makes her angrier than Cassian, but he also makes her feel other things as well. As the two are forced to work closer together, their fire burns hotter. As the peace in the realm is threatened, it will be up to these two to keep it.
